I guess that mile post zero was the SP world building at 1 Market Street, San Francisco.
So is one went from the SP building to the Ferry building and boarded the SP ferry.
Then one the ferry boat docked at the Oakland SP mole and took the SP commuter rail to 16th. street station. You would be at MP 5.5.
I am too young to have witnessed this first hand.
