You have it right about the price. Greyhound fares range from $47.60 to $64 Memphis-St. Louis.
Amtrak charges $79 if you take the train to Carbondale and the bus connection from there (arrive Carbondale 0311, leave 0400), or $114 if you go to Chicago and backtrack. If the roads to St. Louis were bad enough that Greyhound wasn't running, it is possible the Amtrak connecting bus wasn't either.
