The appearance or absence of rear signal lights on Espee diesels was a continuing dilemma for the mechanical dept., and had little to do with a unit's particular assignment. Some SD - 45R road diesels had rear signal light clusters removed within months of being released from Sacramento Shops. Espee's decision to renumber some GP - 9's into the switcher number series,( #2868 - 2899), allowed the mechanical dept. to save a few dollars due to FRA's more generous allowances for inspections.
