This day in Railroad History
February 5, 1976
President Ford signed the Railroad Revitalization and Regulatory Reform Act of 1976, which included the Conrail Final System Plan, into law. The plan included Penn Central plus 6 smaller bankrupt railroads—the Ann Arbor; Erie Lackawanna; Lehigh Valley; Reading Company; Central Railroad of New Jersey; and Lehigh & Hudson River Railway. Although Conrail's government-funded rebuilding of the heavily dilapidated railroad succeeded by the end of the 1970s in improving the physical condition of its infrastructure, the fundamental economic regulatory issues remained, and Conrail continued to post losses of as much as $1 million a day. Conrail management, recognizing the need for more regulatory freedom, were among the parties lobbying for what became the Staggers Act of 1980, which significantly loosened the ICC's rigid economic control of the rail industry. This allowed Conrail and other carriers the opportunity to become profitable and strengthen their finances.

February 6, 1951
On the cold, drizzly night of Feb. 6, 1951, a Pennsylvania Railroad express train called "The Broker" derailed and crashed on a temporary trestle near downtown Woodbridge, afterfailing to observe a 25mph slow order. Eighty-five of the 1,100 people on board died and hundreds were injured. Five decades later, the legacy of the crash - the deadliest American railroad accident since World War II - remains as sharp, tangled and twisted as the mass of steel strewn that night on the 26-foot-high embankment along Fulton Street. The Southern Pacific #4449 was painted black in the spring of 2000 for a series BNSF Employee Specials. All Southern Pacific logos were removed from the locomotive and tenders for the specials, with BNSF emblems applied. In 2001 the locomotive and tenders were still black. Although, the 2001 blacken set had "Southern Pacific Lines" lettered on the tender. (The canteen car still had the BNSF logo on it.) The paint scheme was called its "World War II" look. The train was on a public excursion from Portland, OR to Yakima, WA over Stampede Pass and back to Portland, OR. The photo shown was shot on 27 May 2001 as the train was charging south along the Puget Sound at Solo Point near Steilacoom, WA.
