In retrospect that period was so brief. When I hired out with the BN 7 years after the merger it was all green. The BN had done an amazingly rapid job of painting over all the pre-merger locomotives by then. When I think of how we still see ATSF painted locomotives 15 years after the BNSF merger and how long other railroads have taken to repaint I'm amazed at how quickly we lost traces of the GN, NP, SP&S and CB&Q. At least there were still cabooses and freight cars that lasted for decades.
Penn Central was another railroad that was quick (even quicker than BN I believe) to repaint. My theory is that it was an attempt to show unity after a poorly executed merger. With everyone watch the BN merger two years after the PC merger the BN might have been anxious to cover it's tracks and coat all the locomotives with bright green (the color money) paint.
