I heard that the SP&S guys said that pairing Alco's with EMD's caused the Alco's to wear out quicker. The Alco's reached their maximum tractive effort at a lower speed than the EMD's so they were always working harder. The story said that the SP&S guys found that by only MUing Alco's to Alco's then they had as good a maintenance record as EMD's. Too bad SP didn't learn that lesson.
