Here's another shot from my collection, by TC Miller. This is the NP's train #680, making a setout in Tacoma, very early in the morning. I love the look of the kerosene switch lamps glowing in a row.
Many memories here, my first year out of high school, I worked nights as a yard clerk. The yard could be a spooky place for at night! I can remember walking tracks, verifying car numbers, when suddenly, there'd be a tap on my shoulder. A guy in the open door of a boxcar would ask if I had a smoke or something. I'd about jump out of my skin. There were huge rats that fed on spilled grain, so fat, they had a hard time waddling over rails. Over in the old part of the yard, built when cars were much narrower, it was a squeeze to get through. I always worried about a line of cars moving, and getting rolled between them.
