I don't think being a ' career railroader ' is necessary to be a successful Amtrak CEO. The position requires far more experience in politics & schmoozing various elected officials than actual on - the - ground railroading. Graham Claytor was employed in the legal department @ Southern, where he was charged with getting rid of all passenger trains. David Gunn only worked in marketing @ Santa Fe, yet his experiences in dealing with politisized public transit systems served him well in his days @ Amtrak. Friends of mine who work for Amtrak still speak highly of the effects Gunn had; they also wish he would return as CEO. Alex Kummant worked for Ewe - Pee; whatever happened to him ???
