He or she can elect to control each DPU set separately or concurrently. It's a method referred to as "putting up the fence" or "taking down the fence."

From the engineer's standpoint, DPU's can make train operation easier. Response time is much faster and the risk of a break-in-two is reduced. The down side is what happens when there's a loss of communication or an improper command response.
