I have read many articles and viewed pics of that grade, with the runaway track equipped with the automatic safety switch. What a awesome stretch of track. I recall one article saying that if you stood in the rear vestibule of a 3 car passenger consist going downhill on Saluda, your FEET would be higher than the locomotive in front. I dont know how Southern trainmen handled that without more wrecks and fatalities then they did. Every photo I have seen taken in the diesel era shows CLOUDS of brake smoke from every wheel on the consist.
