I was at the fire last night around 10pm. I was railfanning with my son and it was our first trip to Tehachapi. We were at our hotel a few miles away and heard something on the scanner about a fire with an alcohol tank car at Tunnel 9. We got in the car to investigate. As soon as we left the hotel we could see a red sky on the horizon. From Highway 58 we could see flames shooting up from the wreck. Flames must have been 30-40 feet high. We exited at Keene and went to the loop. The tank car was upright right at west end of the short tunnel with several box cars coupled to the tank car. Fire fighters were there but they pulled out to let it burn. Fortunately with the damp conditions, the fire did not spread to the grass. I took a few photos and we headed up to the monument overlook were you could see the great balls of fire and the massive glowing clouds of smoke.
As we went back to Keene, the sherriffs had the road closed. We went back this morning and black smoke was still billowing. The county road was still closed and the wreck contractor was staging at Keene.
We had two great days with lots of and a bit more excitement than we expected. Obviously there no trains running on Sunday.
