This day in Railroad History
March 6, 1984
The Oregon & Northwestern Railroad ran its last train. For most of its life, the O&NW was owned by the Edward Hines Lumber company in Eastern Oregon. The O&NW was a common carrier, but largely functioned as a log carrier for its parent. In 1984, the rising waters of nearby Malheur Lake indundated the UP's Burns Branch, which provided the only connection to the outside world. The UP quit running and so did the O&NW. A good many cars, mostly the O&NW's fleet of 50-foot, double door boxcars, were trapped in Burns by the end of service. The cars left in Burns were later trucked out to Crane, where they were placed back on the rails and shipped out. The O&NW's locomotives and caboose were later rolled inside one of the drying sheds, and operations ground to a halt.

March 7, 1976
Auto Train No. 3 derailed at Possum Point, Virginia, on the tracks of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad. The NTSB investigation of this accident disclosed that a wheel moved off of its axle seat due to a crack which extended through the wheel tread, plate and hub. This fracture also extended through a figure 1 stamped on the back side of the wheel rim. The analysis of the cracked wheel which resulted in the derailment at Possum Point, disclosed that the crack originated in a stamped mark on the rim of the wheel. This wheel had been exposed to excessive heating from braking and the crack initiation may have resulted partly from this condition. Privately owned Auto-Train also suffered another derailment 2 months later at Jarratt, Virginia that was also determined to be a cracked wheel.

With its new paint scheme almost done, the curly stripes and the word "Metrolink" on the front are all that seem to be missing, Metrolink 867 is ready to go to work again at LAUS on the afternoon of Feb. 25, 2010.
