Some where used as parts sources for other similar locomotive types. Others, too far beyond economical repair. GE and ALCO just didn't make a very good locomotive that could hold up under the loads SP subjected them too. Wiring was a big problem on ALCO and GEs and GEs were labor intensive to service and repair.
