That crane was for the elevated section of 280 which ended at Third St. and was never used and later torn down. As I recall, it was originally supposed to connect with the beloved (yeah right) but no one Embardadero Freeway I-480. At the time of this photo, you either took the flyover to 6th or the off ramp that dumped you onto Third. Was a quick way to get to the Doggie Diner at Third & Townsend.
