The Rails to Trails Conservancy and the National Trust for Historic Preservation are both worthwile organizations. Presenting one organization as being pro-rail preservation and imply the other is not involved in rail preservation is a false choice. The Route of the Hiawatha Trail in Idaho is one of the best US examples of preserving an historic rail resource. In Pittsburgh, two former railroad bridges have been beautifully restored and incorporated into the Three Rivers Heritage Trail network.
My girlfriend & I organized and led two bicycle tours of Pittsburgh's North Side for the 2006 National Preservation Conference. A short portion of the tours utilized one of the rail trails.
