Another thing that killed the western sugar beet industry: high fructose corn syrup.
Thanks to ADM and Cargill, another high volume industrial application was found for corn syrup.
When soft drink companies learned how much money they could save when the changed from high-priced sugar (thanks to import tariffs) to HFCS, the game was over.
The USDA subsidies to midwest corn growers helped the economic equation, too. $40 billion since 1990. (Now you know why Iowa caucuses are so important every 4 years.)
If you want a Coke made with real sugar, get the kind still sold in glass bottles: hecho en Mexico.
