The Izzak Walton inn is probably the most perfect rail fan getaway that I have experienced. Talk about low impact train watching. You just sit on the porch or in the restaurant and the trains come to you. The Hotel even prints out the days schedule for you complete with a consist list. The only way it could be more perfect would be a scanner tuned to the road channel on the porch. Glacier park is pretty good too .
I was there for one of the Altamont(Alberta/Montana) weekends sponsored by Cannon. Imagine attending and having a Cannon rep handing you a $3500.00 camera and turning you loose to shoot to your hearts desire in that scenery.
Helper operations there are cool too. The trains don't stop. The helpers catch up and start shoving. The brake system is matched by a transponder on the pilot that reads the data from FRED. When the helpers are done a servo on the pilot pulls the pin on the coupler and the helper cew throttles back, falls away and returns to Essex.
