The most exotic place Ive ever been for railroads, actually in general was Jailanuer, Inner Mongolia, China. The hotel only had electricity and hot water for 2 hours in the morning and 4 hours at night, and was heated by a giant coal furnace.
But all night, you could hear the 35 steam locomotives at work in the famous big pit at Jailanuer, now all gone of course. And to sum it up, one morning I, as a 18 year old recent high-school graduate, rode the miners train around the big pit. Boy, were the cars disgusting, filled with coal dust, and the miners were sure surprised to see an American teenager in the middle of a coal mine in Inner Mongolia.
This was in August of 2008, and Jailanuer is now all gone, replaced by trucks and the 4 diesel locomotives.
