I would suggest to Mike that Portland isn't making a choice between streetcars and light rail but that in Portland's case the two serve different markets and needs. In effect we are choosing both and putting them in where, in most cases, they are most appropriate. In Portland's case the streetcar serves a shorter distance need, while the light rail serves a longer distance. This is in the majority of cases.
I am not suggesting that Portland has a perfect solution, but as a resident I am very supportive of most of our regional transportation planning and developments.
