Great photos as usual, Mitch.
Quick, what do the Franklin Institute, the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania have in common?
They all have a Budd-built "Pioneer", or course...
The Franklin Institute has the original "Pioneer", the stainless steel amphibian plane built in 1931 as an example of their ability to construct in stainless steel. You probably saw it just outside the main entrance.
The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, of course, has Budd's first railroad "Pioneer", the "Pioneer Zephyr" of 1934 that, as we know, is the first successful stainless steel diesel streamliner. I visited there in 1971 when it was still on display out back next to the U-505 submarine.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at Strasburg has a pair of PRR "Pioneer III" commuter coaches donated by SEPTA upon their retirement from active service. The RMPA collection also includes several other Budd products: a former Lehigh Valley RDC-1, a former PRR/PC/Amtrak "Metroliner" cab-coach, and a former Reading coach-observation from the 1937 "Crusader".
