This day in Railroad History
May 25, 1912
The relocated Panama Railway was completed on May 25, 1912. The railway had been built 65 years earlier and had been bought by the bankrupt French company attempting to build the Panama Canal. In 1902 the US Govenment bought the failed company and took over construction. The railway had to be moved out of the Canal's path, but was needed for construction, so it was relocated. When the “Big Ditch” began operations, freight business on the railroad almost disappeared except on occasions when the waterway was blocked by landslides. In 1988 the KCS took over the Panama Canal Railway, and now operates intermodal and passenger trains.

St.Maries River Railroad #103 and #102 leads a train of 13 cars of finished lumber across the Benewah Bridge on April 16, 2010. This is the lowest I have ever seen the south end of the lake in my 60+++++ years. I grew up near St.Maries and my railfanning of this area goes back to a very early age, when this was the Milwaukee Road.
