I understand that remachining (i.e. turning as on a lathe) could be done on solid wheels as well as on wheels with tires. I wonder what has caused the shift towards solid wheels only, in North America, while it remains popular in other places (e.g. I know of Sweden)?

Once you have used up the tolerances on a solid wheel, I imagine it must be discarded as scrap metal, while a tire is easy to replace and the wheel set is as good as new. Are solid wheels significantly stronger?
