AREA definatioin
WR- welded rail, two 39' rails (78') and not over three 39' rails (117') welded together.
CWR more than 3 39' rails welded together and was originally 39 39' foot rails welded either by electric flashbutt or gas. The "stocks" could be transported on 40 40' flat cars withour any overhang.
IIRC when CWR became contract welded at the mill and the train had to go through interchange the train length length was standardized to accomodate 20 78' rails as the mill was rolling 78' lengths.
