Everyone has good points posted here. BNSF does seem to have a more tolerant attitude toward Amtrak than UP. UP sees BNSF getting some substantial public investment in ROW to accommodate increased passenger service, though this tends to be on HSR corridors or commuter routes, not cross-country. BNSF quoted the State of Washington an exorbitant amount of money to reestablish passenger service over Stampede Pass through to Pasco - like around $300 mil. And yes, while a lot of that equipment at Beech Grove is old, once it goes through a refurbishment, it will be good for 20+ years. Not everything has to be "new." Just "rebuilt." The Amtrak car fleet, if decently maintained and outshopped periodically, would be around for decades.
