This day in Railroad History
June 28, 1945
The ICC approved abandonment of the Yosemite Valley Railroad. The YVR ran in the San Joaquin Valley in California, following the Merced River from Merced into Yosemite Valley. About 80 miles long, the railroad carried tourists into Yosemite Valley until 1926, when El Portal Road was built, but continued carrying silver, gold and other minerals from mines in Merced Canyon. The railroad also carried lumber (from the Yosemite or Sugar Pine lunber companies) to Merced Falls, to be cut at a group of sawmills at a cataract on the Merced River.
