There have been several postings regarding the long line of intermodal well cars south of Olympia adjacent to I-5. Mention has been made that they are a result of the down turn in the economy. But it is more than that. They are all former SP 48-foot well cars. It appears that the shipping industry is moving towards two major sizes of containers - 40 feet for international and 53 feet for domestic business. I saw a number of the old high bulkhead 40-foot Gunderson cars on several UP intermodal last Sunday. They must be getting about 20 years old by now. It may be that the 48-foot cars will never return to service.
