You did some hiking Drew, to get those photos. Top one looks like it's right at the summit & the bottom one is right at the switch at the top switchback. If they were taken in August, I'd guess that it was early in the month. Dan Ranger put the newly painted cab window frames back in later in the month and they don't show up here.
1972 is the summer that I worked there and I'm not certain from your photos who is running. Al Shelton gave me a pair of those black arm sleeves & it sorta looks like them in one of the images.
We did not run the 2-8-2T 17 until a little later in the month. Those sharp curves were hard on her flanges. The late Henry Sorenson came up one Sunday & fired her up.
