LRV question

This has been rolling around in my head for some time now. What is the reason for the departure from PCC style foot controls in new LRVs ? Is it a patent issue? Maintenance issue ? I would think that a foot actuated control would be more ergonomic than hand operated controls on a desk. I understand that the PCC style controller is a mechanical multi-point controller and not a solid state device but why the hand controls?
