Where is geologic formation on route of # 3 & #4 ?

A few years ago I was on the back of Amtrak #3 returning from a PV trip to Alburquerque. We were late so it was light out. As we dropped down from Barstow, or maybe even just beyond Victorville, we passed through a cut with a very interesting geologic formation. Going to fast to get any pictures that time but I am headed back there in September to the AAPRCO Convention. I would really appreciate information about the approximate mile post or other designation so I can be ready this time. Also, any reference to the Altamont Press Time Table Division would be helpful. Thanks !
