Jerry's story reminds me of a similar experience I had at SP's Sacramento shops.

It was Memorial day, 1964. I was on my way home from active duty military at Ft. Ord near Monterey. I wanted to have a look-see inside the Sacto shops. I just walked right on in; nobody was around because of the holiday. I spent about an hour looking at everything that I wanted to see. A D&RGW Kraus-Maffi hydraulic, etc. When I was ready to leave I wasn't sure how to get back out. The place was huge! Then I spotted a guard before he saw me! I casually showed myself and of course he hollered at me. I asked him what was the fastest way to leave. He obligated me, was polite and non-threatening. Couldn't imagine doing something like this today.
