Chinese aircraft wreck yesterday...interesting observation

The horrible accident in northeast China at 1300 GMT was on AT&T web-based news, but as sad as that was, I found the editorial quote from the article below as food for thought:

"Henan Airlines and many other regional Chinese airlines flying shorter routes have struggled in the past few years, losing passengers to high-speed railroad lines that China has aggressively expanded."

I wonder how well that has really worked, and how their success (?) could be applied to North America.
