About 18 years ago, I was loaned a set of time books from a former Coast Division fireman. One item that I learned of was that the 5000 class 4-10-2 types were used as helpers up the hill out of SLO sometimes. One number that comes to mind is 5021, the one that was saved and on display in LA.
SP used Decks, Mikes and AC's the most as helpers, with the MT class also. During the War, even the smaller types were pushed into helper service, like Ten-Wheelers.
