In 1989 there was still an SP and UP's path into the Bay Area was the old Western Pacific line. The standard cab C40-8s were new and leading the hot trains. I wish SP had bought some of these standard cab C40-8s. These are my favorite toasters. They would have looked quite nice in red and gray.
Photos 1 and 2: UP standard cab 9163 is leading 9325, 9340 and the Milpitas Turn at Midway, CA on March 20, 1989.
UP 9344 is one of five standard cab c40-8s leading a westbound APL double stack train at Altamont on the former WP line as it crosses over the abandoned SP right of way on March 20, 1989.
