A locomotive's external appearance is not necessarily a reflection of its mechanical condition or its ability to provide safe and reliable railroad transportation (in other words, don't judge a book by its cover). Many railfans are far too preoccupied with paint schemes and the "clean appearance" of a locomotive for their pictures. Remember to simply take railroading as it comes, and that railroads do not operate to pander to railfan fantasies and expectations.
