It's not quite that simple. Steam engines had variable horsepower - it produces peak power at one particular speed, and lesser power at all others. Diesel-electrics produce fixed power, since the prime mover can be left running at the speed that produces the peak power no matter what speed the wheels are turning. So a horsepower-to-horsepower comparison is a bit misleading.

That said, I seem to recall seeing a figure of 5500 horsepower as peak output from a Challenger.
