Baldwin did build some units with "conventional" MU on special order. The reason for air MU might be that I think Westinghouse (WABCO) supplied Balwin's air MU equipment, as well as their electrical equipment. There are some advantages of air MU, but also disadvantages. Remember that in the era these were built, the railroads still tended to keep like builder's units, and sometime even models, in "pure" consists in part due to differences in MU wiring (ALCO vs. EMD), air brakes (one pipe vs. two pipe), and dynamic brake control.
I think I have seen photos of S-12 sets (x3?) on a sugar beet drag to Santa Ana? Were they used on other transfer drags in the LA basin?
