Good point. One of many things that I noted while riding locomotives in Guatemala in the
70's was that the enginemen never had gloves, they probably could not afford them and neither
would the railroad at that late date. The fireman always had a wad of waste in his left
hand and used it all day when turning valves and starting the injector. Worked out pretty
well for them.
