I, the exalted Secretary of the Train Riders Association of California (all readers humbly bow), my wife, and our exalted Vice President (a r h bow) and his wife rode the first Starlight to suffer from the effects of the slide. The day after!
We were bussed from the Falls to Portland and I think that's what Amtrak did the whole time the service was curtailed. Since then TRAC has supported a program that would somehow upgrade whatever Oregon rail lines necessary to increase a robust alternative, either the Siskiyou roller coaster or the central northern BNSF dark territory line (whichever makes the most sense).
As far as Amtrak's decision to curtail the service, we think it was absolutely correct. The Starlight is a premier train and if it cannot offer premier service, why bother?
