The thing about shutdowns on the UP, is that they usually create more work for those of us on the xtra boards. The UP is all about the numbers game, yards are judged on dwell time. Holidays create excessive dwell time for trains so to prevent this most of the junk is gathered up and sent out just prior to the holiday shutdown in the form of xtra trains so that it will be in transit during the holiday period. I find that I turn and burn when we get close to a holiday right up to the minute before the proposed shutdown which means unless I lay off I wind up working the holiday. Most locals are annulled on holidays.
