One more blow to the UP Winnemucca Sub will take place in January, when US Gypsum's Empire Plant will close after 87 years of operation. The closure is due primarily to the downturn in new housing starts. The Reno Gazette-Journal has an in-depth report on the closure of the Empire plant and what may be in store for the Empire-Gerlach area. The report
can be accessed at this RGJ link.
Up until at least the later 90's, one could still see WP hoppers hauling gypsum between Empire and the Bay Area on UP manifest trains.
