AlaskaPacker,
I was given a small amount of SP stock as a kid back in the 60's. As reported above it became Santa Fe Southern Pacific during the SP-SF merger attempt, then Santa Fe Pacific after the merger was blocked and the SP railroad sold off to the Rio Grande. Next, SFP divested their gold mine and real estate holdings, giving SFP shareholders stakes in each spin-off. I sold those, but hung onto the SFP stock.
Eventually the Santa Fe and Burlington Norther merged, and the stock became BNSF. When Berkshire-Hathaway bought it. BNSF shareholders were given the option of BRK class B stock, Cash or a mix. I think you got a 60-40 stock-cash mix if you didn't specify.
Hope this helps. I'd try the Berkshire-Hathaway investor relations department first, as I suspect the SP, SFSP, SFP and BNSF ones don't exist anymore.
