Color variations from batch to batch etc. have nothing to do with the failure of a paint job. Today's fading of yellows, oranges, greens, etc. has to do with the new pigments; they just don't stand up to ultraviolet light as well as the older ones. Have you noticed the scarcity of yellow, [medium] green, or orange automobiles over the last 10-20 years? It's because yellow chromate, a key ingredient in these colors, can't be used anymore. Yellow chromate's chemical name is lead(II) chromate, and there is no replacement available which has as good brilliance, hiding power, and weather durability. So, yes, pink could very well be an eventual result (there have been problems with newer red pigments too). The chalkiness is a result of the ultraviolet light breaking down the solidified paint vehicle, causing it to depolymerize, and it's subsequent "oxidation", which is only tangengially related to the pigment(s).
