I might add that perhaps it is a play on words. "Wheelchecker"...might be 'to keep the wheels in check' as it is used with a guard rail. The guard rail keeps the wheels 'in check' from derailing at a frog or the pictured device.
So another question is does the term "Wheelchecker" have anything to do with guard rails used on a switch, or is it truly a unique device for inspecting wheels? I don't believe I have ever seen the metal tag of "Wheelchecker" anywhere else.
Those cutouts opposite the guard rails are really unique.
Anyone with an old RACOR catalog might be able to help. :)
