I'm not sure that people are getting dumber, there's just a lot more people living near the tracks. Dad came home many times in the 50's through 70's with sad tales to tell (Mom, "not at the dinner table!"). I remember hearing about a trip on the Enumclaw Local (NP) that worked out of Tacoma. This was roughly 1960.
As they came down grade at about 10 mph with many loads of logs and other merchandise, at the trestle at Burnett, there was a girl walking a horse across it! This was a several hundred foot long trestle, something like 80 feet tall. The girl got off, but the horse got a couple feet between ties, and they mangled it at 5mph in emergency.
Around Tacoma, it was fairly common to hit drunks either walking or asleep on the tracks.
Riding with him, while switching at Olympia, I can remember kids climbing through the moving train. We stopped and Dad gave em hell, which I'm sure they laughed off.
No question, there are a lot of really STUPID people!
