I don't have much experience with F-Units (other than eyeballing the handful that came through the service track destined for Points Elsewhere), but 'freight-geared' sounds a bit silly to me. Most freight-geared locos use 62:15 t/m combos, which can be installed in less than a day (with the proper drop pit/tools/people). I can understand their choosiness if there are issues with carbody leads and contactors (re: series/parallel), but I would figure that any large corporation that wants to drop alot of money on F-units these days could probably pony up a little more to reconfigure the electrical system of a 'passenger-geared' F-unit.
