I remember several years ago seeing a northbound Coast Starlight arriving in Portland at around midnight, about eight hours late, courtesy of both P42s going dead. The rescue power?
An entire Cascades TALGO trainset!!!

This late #14 arrived in the Rose City coupled on behind one of the TALGO sets that normally lays over at Eugene for the next day's northbound runs, #500 and #504. Upon arriving in Portland, the Cascades set cut off, and a 500-series P32-8BWH that was serving as the station "switcher" coupled on to take the Starlight the rest of the way to Seattle.
