Either my sources or JLY/JWL on these forums has said that HF (Head Free) rail was a failure as a cross section and most of it had been removed all over the SP system by something like mid 1960s (or that a program had been established by then to remove it), a statement which surpised me. I think HF was a NYC idea.

That's what the [UP] Roseville district chief engineer (DTW) told me about 10-12 years ago. He was from the SP, -- he started out in Charlie Neal's day.

There were more snow sheds on that section of track than on the entire rest of the Mountain. The last few times I went over it, in summer, it was Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. So, the SP threw in the towel, yes, even after 120 years.
