On the UP in California, they've been pretty common on locals (that can use 6-axle units) and haulers for several years now. In fact, the crewmembers of UP's Leesdale Local probably survived the head-on collision with the Metrolink train west of CP Topanga (Chatsworth) because they had two of the units (8485 and 8491) instead of SD40-2's.
