A note to Drew regarding the photo caption : The train sheds visible in the background of your picture have NOT been replaced by high rise buildings. These train sheds covered the platforms @ King St. Station, and after disappearing for a while, have been replaced by new ones installed for Sounder Commuter Train service.
You may have been thinking of the train sheds at Seattle Union Station, which served Union Pacific & Milwaukee Road. These were out of your picture to the right, across 4th Avenue South viaduct to the East. In the mid - 1990's, Paul Allen, of Microsoft fame, purchased Union Station under his Vulcan Ventures entity. The bad news is that the station trackage & platform area, visible from the East side of 4th Ave. South or Airport Way, was torn out & a medium - rise office building is now located on this site. The good news is, Union Station has undergone a beautiful restoration & now houses the offices of Sound Transit, among others. My wife, grandson, & I spent an enjoyable hour in the lobby there just today, as part of our trip to the Seattle Home & Garden show via Sounder from Auburn. I even commented to her that Union is the prettier depot, inside & out.
