Washington Gov. Gregoir announced last week that she has brokered a deal that will close 50% of the coal burning Centrailia power plant in 2020 and completely close the plant by 2025. The announcement brought cheers to environmental groups who now plan to move on to stopping coal export locations in Longview and north of Seattle. Enviro groups are planning to take the recently O.K.ed Longview operation to court later this spring. The groups say that shutting down the power plants at Boardman and Centrailia is not enough, and stopping coal exports is also key to stopping global warming. The groups say that they should have no trouble delaying the coal export efforts in court at least 5 years, time enough to lobby for a federal ban on all coal exports through congress.
